Hosted by Dakar based project partners ISRA and CNCR, more than 40 representatives from Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal met in person for the first time to share and discuss the project’s progress during its first year, together with the challenges encountered. Attendees in person were joined by more than 60 project participants online via the zoom platform.
The SustainSahel meeting was held at the Hotel Saly on the ocean coast in Saly, Senegal on 8th -9th September 2021, which provided main conference facilities and breakout rooms to accommodate the plenary and detailed discussions, as well as focused workshops. Plenty of time was allocated to networking sessions to allow participants working on specific programmes to get to know one another, as well as opportunities for cross-disciplinary discussions to establish mutual understanding and effective working across partners and territories.
A field trip to Niakhar, organised on the final day of the meeting and attended by all partners present, brought to life the detailed research work that will be carried out across the seven sites in Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso. Whilst rain fell heavily during the visit, it did not dampen participants’ enthusiasm for the opportunity to extend their knowledge and speak directly to those running the research stations.
Participants in person extended their thanks to the hosts not only for organising the meeting facilities but also for arranging for Covid testing to be carried out on site, enabling prompt and safe travel back to their home countries.
